The Lullaby {The Ordinary Moments} #9

It’s Sunday so I’m linking up with the lovely Katie at Mummy Daddy Me for the Ordinary Moments!

Every night ato the end of Arthur’s routine we read him one of two lullabies.  Marks favorite is The Owl and The Pussycat.

This is mine:

Wynken, Blynken & Nod

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night

Sailed off in a wooden shoe—

Sailed on a river of crystal light,

Into a sea of dew.

“Where are you going, and what do you wish?”

The old moon asked the three.

“We have come to fish for the herring fish

That live in this beautiful sea;

Nets of silver and gold have we!”

Said Wynken,

And Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,

As they rocked in the wooden shoe,

And the wind that sped them all night long

Ruffled the waves of dew.

The little stars were the herring fish

That lived in that beautiful sea—

“Now cast your nets wherever you wish—

Never afeard are we”;

So cried the stars to the fishermen three:

And Nod.

All night long their nets they threw

To the stars in the twinkling foam—

Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,

Bringing the fishermen home;

‘T was all so pretty a sail it seemed

As if it could not be,

And some folks thought ‘t was a dream they ‘d dreamed

Of sailing that beautiful sea—

But I shall name you the fishermen three:

And Nod.

Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,

And Nod is a little head,

And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies

Is a wee one’s trundle-bed.

So shut your eyes while mother sings

Of wonderful sights that be,

And you shall see the beautiful things

As you rock in the misty sea,

Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:

And Nod.

To me this is so beautiful, I had never heard of it before but we were given a book of nursery rhymes and lullabies and this was in there, I read it once and fell in love with it.  Mark reads it and changes the last few lines a little to “Arthur’s little bed” and “shut your eyes while daddy sings”.

Do you have a favourite Lullaby?

Happy Sunday!

Peekaboo {The Ordinary Moments} #9

It’s Sunday so I’m linking up with the lovely Katie at Mummy Daddy Me for the Ordinary Moments!

This week Arthur’s love of Peekaboo has stepped up a level!!  We have been ‘peeking’ under and over the sofa.  He thinks it’s hilarious to look under the sofa and he looks so cute peering under there!!!

This has got to be the simplest game around but it brings SO much joy in our house.  I love it.  I’m sure it won’t be long until less simple games are favoured so I’m savouring every second of what is currently a very ordinary moment in our house!

Happy Sunday!

A day in the life of Seychellesmama {The Ordinary Moments} #8

It’s Sunday so I’m linking up with the lovely Katie at Mummy Daddy Me for the Ordinary Moments!

I thought I’d write a post about a typical day for me.  I imagine that actually it’s not that different to wherever you’re reading this from.  if you have kids there’s the same stuff you have to do wherever you are in the world 🙂  The differences will probably appear on the weekend, I’ll do a separate post for that!

Arthur wakes up at the totally unsociable time of between 5-6 😢every morning.  I never ever imagined myself thinking 6am was a lie in but since Arthur it is!!  its light by around half 6 so it’s not so bad.  Mark has to wake up at 6 to get ready for work anyway.

I get Arthur changed and give him a bottle.  Mark makes tea and coffee we have a bit of family time before he goes to work at 7.  I’ll then give Arthur his breakfast.  A friend lent me a sing and sign DVD so me and Arthur have been watching this in the mornings which he seems to enjoy.

Between 8-9 Arthur goes back to sleep, usually for around 90mins so in this time I get as much boring stuff done as possible:

  • sweep the floor….the floors are tiled as it helps keep the place cool but also easy to keep clean, but it’s amazing to see how much dust and general grub gets accumulated every day!!
  • Wash up breakfast stuff
  • get started on making some dinner (although mostly we make dinner that goes for more than one night so this isn’t everyday!)
  • try to do a little bit of exercise….nothing major just a bit of yoga or some sort of toning thing!
  • get some washing on.

(I imagine this is all sounding pretty familiar right!?)

When Arthur gets up he will have another bottle.  We will then do some errands like dropping off the bins (no door to door collection here!) pick up some things from the shop and have a little walk.  Taking Arthur for a walk where we live is not really that easy as there’s no pavements so I make sure I take him out when I know the roads will be quiet (don’t get me wrong they are never busy but there are still quieter times!).  Anywhere walking from my house quickly ends up having a sea view it’s really lovely and it’s a real nice way to relax getting some sea air, there’s usually a light breeze the closer to the beach you get too which is always welcome!

At the end of our road!

Once we are back we play in the house a bit and then I’ll make him some lunch.  He will then usually have another nap around 1 for about an hour up to two if I’m lucky!

During this time I’ll have my lunch and maybe watch some tv (we download all our tv so I’m always at least 2 days behind anything usually more!). Ill try to do some blog stuff !  I usually am iMessaging my Mum around this time too (I love that we can do that)

When Arthur gets up he will have another bottle.  I quite often Skype mum and dad at this time. (Right now we are 4 hours ahead of UK time but this goes back to 3 once the clocks change there….they don’t change here.). We then play some more, and at some point between 3-4 Mark gets home from work, he will always have more to do when he gets home though (teacher!) Ill try and get out with Arthur.

Half 5 Arthur has his dinner followed by bath and stories!  He’s in bed for half 6.

It’s dark by 7.  Mark and I will have dinner together, watch a film or some TV current favs are Modern Family, Sherlock and Game of Thrones (watched the final of season 3 last night oh my god….can’t wait for season 4!)

So yeah that’s it really!!  I try to get Arthur in the pool at least one week day a week we have the paddling pool now so I can always chuck him in there for a quick cool off!  We are coming up to the really hot and dry time of year so the paddling pool and our air con are really gonna come into their own!  Something that I feel is really missing here are any parent and baby classes and a park.

On weekends we always make sure we get some proper ‘Seychelles time’ but I’ll save that for another day!  Thanks for reading!

Happy Sunday!

The Paddling Pool {The Ordinary Moments} #7

Its Sunday so I’m linking up with Katie at Mummy Daddy Me for the Ordinary Moments again!

On Friday Mark came home from work with a paddling pool for Arthur.  I was so excited as I’ve been desperate for him to have one!  I know we are spoiled with having access to a swimming pool two minutes away but there is something very special about a paddling pool, I think so any way!

I have such happy memories of being in the paddling pool when I was little and so I was so excited for Arthur now having his own.

On Saturday I was Skyping my dad who has been working on a boat for the last two months.  We hadn’t been able to chat for a while as the wifi on board isn’t very reliable (they are in the middle of the North Sea so you can’t expect it to be great!).  Half way through the call we had a power cut 😦 so we couldn’t finish talking which was sad.  It got really hot in the house really quick so I jumped at the opportunity to get Arthur in the paddling pool!!

I only filled it up a little but he had SO much fun splashing and crawling around in the cool water.

Paddling Pool fun!

Paddling Pool fun!

Im not sure whether part of the excitement of the paddling pool for me being little was that it was only the odd day you could use it as its obviously a weather dependent activity!!  However I hope that Arthur will continue to have fun in his and I know we will get lots of use out of it :). Arthur is a very lucky boy to have a life where playing in a paddling pool really can be an ordinary moment!

Happy Sunday

The Dentist {The Ordinary Moments} #6

I’m a little late for this one but I’m linking up with Katie at Mummy Daddy Me for the Ordinary Moments again!

Today (Monday), Arthur had his monthly weight check.  The nurse asked me if we had seen the dentist yet.  I explained that I had asked about this last month and the lady had told me it wasn’t until 9 months…..

“Who was she?  Who told you that?”

(I’m not dropping any one in it!!!  No one wants an angry Seychellois woman on there back, believe me!)

Anyway, she tells me I must go today.  I had also been told previously that the dentist was at the hospital (on the other side of the island).  I thought i’d check to be sure.

“I’ll show you.”

(Cue me mentally preparing myself to take directions to some obscure random place)

Turns out it was in the same building, there is a brand shiny new dentist in the health centre.  All the equipment is brand new I was very impressed.  The lady in there tells me that Arthur should have indeed been at 6 months but not to worry.  She tells me that Arthur will come for his next check at 1year and then every 6 months from then on.  The checks at the moment are more to get him used to going to the dentist so he isn’t afraid, I thought that was really sweet.  I had to lay down on the dentist chair and have Arthur laid on top of me.  The dentist looks at his teeth with the little mirror thing and said they looked nice and strong, asked how I was cleaning them etc.

She tells me that the gap in his two front teeth while not super common its almost certainly nothing to worry about but they will monitor to see how it closes.

Arthur was good as gold, I was a little concerned he might bite the dentist since he likes to chew on anything but he laid there fascinated by the light above him!!

A rather ordinary moment but a first and one that made me proud of my good little boy and his shiny strong teeth!

Ummm, Happy Monday…… 🙂

The baby gym {The Ordinary Moments} #5

It’s Sunday so that means I’m linking up with Katie at Mummy Daddy Me with my fifth post for ‘The Ordinary Moments’.

The other day I was looking at old photos of Arthur and the ones that particularly caught my eye was him in his baby gym.  I actually got pretty emotional looking at them as I have a lot of him in there and it was amazing seeing how much he had changed from that first picture!

The baby gym was the first thing that we bought for Arthur.  We were on Mahe for the weekend as Mark was doing a half marathon.  I was about 5 months pregnant.  We were excited as there is a baby shop there that sells a lot of European brands and wanted to check it out.  We don’t get over to Mahe all that often so we wanted to take advantage of the trip.

We first looked at the sensible things like sterilisers and discussed with the owner about ordering a car seat but soon we got distracted with the more exciting things!  The baby gym was one of them!  It had so many things on it and it was so brightly coloured and lovely we had to get it!  (We then did also buy the steriliser and some bottles but thats much less exciting!)

When we got back to Praslin we resisted setting it up and playing with it ourselves but we did show our parents on Skype (I’ve done a post about Skype keeping the family close).   It was kind of a big deal for us, it was the first thing we had bought and we finally allowed ourselves to believe it was really happening, my bump was still pretty teeny tiny at this stage so it wasn’t like that was in our faces all the time yet.

While I was on Mahe waiting to have Arthur (I had to be there two weeks before I had him) Mark was still on Praslin and he set everything up, including the baby gym which was waiting for us when we got back home with Arthur.

I remember the first time he was in there, he just stared at the colours, mesmerised.  The first time Arthur sat unsupported was in the gym (hence blurry picture–excited rushing mummy!!).  Arthur has got so much use out of his baby gym and him being in there really is one of ‘ordinary moments’ of the day but it is always a nice time.  Now that he is crawling around he is less interested but will still play happily with the toys if he’s sat up in there.

For me putting Arthur in the baby gym gives me a little flash back every time.  I realise how much he’s grown but more so how much he’s developed by seeing how he interacts with his toys in there!  It’s funny and pretty silly how you can become emotionally attached to an object but that little baby gym has a lot of wonderful memories for me!

Happy Sunday

The not yet ordinary {The Ordinary Moments} #4

It’s Sunday so that means I’m linking up with Katie at Mummy Daddy Me with my fourth post for ‘The Ordinary Moments’.

I want to remember the little things not just the Kodak moments.

This week has been big for Arthur.

He has stood up by himself (well against the table but without me!)

image  (Excuse the horrible shorts but he’s had heat rash this week so was trying to keep his as cool as possible)

Even bigger then that he is now crawling!!!  We started getting a little forward shuffle in this last week or so but no real distance travelled, but on Thursday he made a break for it and went from his mat over to the tower (i’m pretty good at stacking cups these days!) and then over to the chairs.  Okay so its not particularly graceful yet but he did it.  Very proud he was too!

I do dress him nicely sometimes, honest!

I do dress him nicely sometimes, honest!

These things will soon become “ordinary moments” but two things in one week and particularly the crawling (at 7 months!) has blown my mind and changed our world, that floor is gonna have to be swept like every 5 minutes else he will be constantly covered in sand and dust and real ‘baby proofing’ is going to have to start happening now that so much is within his reach!!

Happy Sunday
